The New Year Shift

So here we are … at the end … or at the beginning.!

How you define those seconds between 11:59pm and 12:00am could very possibly define your journey into 12:01am! This 60 second separation isn't really a separation at all. It is similar to the in-breath and the out-breath – a continuous motion. Typically we don't focus on our breath just as we don't typically focus on minutes flowing into the next.

Yet these 60 seconds are special – they are the only 60 seconds within 365 days that have the power of ritual offering us an opportunity to shift our focus just as we do in meditation.

I love the word shift – it holds no regret, no judgment, no implication. It is a simple redirection of vision, energy and focus. We already know what worked and what didn't work, where we succeeded and where we failed, who we hurt and who hurt us, what serves us and what no longer does. Do we really need to outline it, lament over it, play that movie over and over?

Why not try this – just as in meditation when those annoying, bothersome thoughts creep into our awareness we simply shift back to our awareness of breath, why not try the same technique for your annual New Year's ritual. When those thoughts of regret, remorse and judgment sneak in simple shift your attention to your vision, your focus for the New Year. No struggle, no resistance – a simple shift.

Wishing you much love and laughter in the New Year ~
